Rally
Each term one SSAGO club organises a weekend camp open to all members of SSAGO called a Rally. There is where members of Scout and Guides clubs from across the UK descend upon a single campsite for a weekend of fun. There is usually a Rally every term, in Autumn around early November, the Spring in February and the Summer one in late June or early July. Each rally also has its own theme, requiring everyone to design a fancy dress constume based on that theme, which are then paraded at the ceilidh. Rally is a fantastic way to meet likeminded people from other universities whilst exploring the country.
A typical format for a Rally is:
Friday Evening - Dinner followed by campfire depending on arrival time
Saturday Morning - Breakfast --> Opening ceremony --> Silly games
Saturday Afternoon - Lunch --> Afternoon activities (usually offsite)
Saturday Evening - Dinner --> Ceilidh --> Campfire
Sunday Morning - Breakfast --> Silly games --> Lunch --> Closing ceremony
Afternoon activities can vary from anything including onsite activities including crafts, archery, climbing and backwoods cooking to offsite activities, which are dependant on the host city but typically there are a couple of pub crawls, shopping trip and a hike. Each rally also has a club reps meeting on the saturday morning, whilst the Spring rally will contain the SSAGO AGM on sunday morning.
Rally Kit List
So you've decided to come on Rally the most important thing to note is to be prepared. If it's you're first time on Rally you may want to take note of the Rally Kit List that we've provided below. The worst thing that can happen is to get to Rally and find out you've not brought the right gear. Those lovely high heels or stylish top of the range trainers may look good but once you've put your tent up will will soon be annoyed that you didn't pack the right stuff. This is especially important on a SSAGO camp as the weather has a tendency to be wet and create a very boggy campsite. So take note of the kit we've suggested you should bring.
- Clothes - make sure they are suitable for the conditions
- Waterproof coat
- Washbag - including toothbrush & toothpaste, flannel, towel, soap, hairbrush etc.
- Footwear - if possible hiking boots as campsite can (and do!) become muddy!
- Cutlery - including plate, bowl, mug, knife, fork, spoon and a teatowel
- Torch
- Sleeping Bag
- Rollmat
- Money - especially if you are on a pub crawl!
- Club necker - which you can buy from us
- Alchohol!
Don't worry if you don't have everything on this list. The club has its own equipment plus some members have their own items that you may be able to borrow.
