River Washburn

This years race is to be held at the River Washburn, North Yorkshire. The river is a northern tributary of the River Wharfe and is the only dam-controlled canoeing site in England. It is a first class facility for both competitive and recreational paddling and has recently undergone considerable modifications to the river bed. The site has a new toilet block and footpaths running most of the length of the race course. Further details regarding the Washburn can be found on the BCU Yorkshire website.

Race control will be located at the start of the course, in the car park below the Thruscross reservoir dam. Maps of the race location are available below.

Race Course

All races will be held over the Washburn 'Classic' course. Details of the race course can be found on the GB Wild Water Racing website here.

The river is 3 lm long with rapids about grade 2-3, and an average flow of between 7 and 9 m³/s.  Further details of the river are available on UKRiversGuideBook. 

Start and Finish lines will be clearly marked during the event. The race start line will be located adjacent to the car park below the Thruscross reservoir dam. The finish line will be located adjacent to the car park on the A59. 

Shuttle

There will be no shuttle provided by the organisers this year and it is the responsibility of all Universities to ensure that their competitors arrive at the start line at the designated times. 

Parking at both the start and finish is limited and as such all competitors should park sensibly. Both the start and finish lines are within easy walking distance from the campsite and clubs are asked to limit the number of vehicles at the event car parks to an absolute minimum.

Directions

The river is situated to the north off the A59 between Skipton and Harrogate at Blubberhouses, see below map. 

The race control, start, car park and toilet block will be located at the top of the river below the Thruscross reservoir dam. Please follow the event signs from Blubberhouses towards West End. One mile down the road, turn right into a narrow access lane. Please beware of the 'sleeping policemen' and note that this lane is very narrow and has limited passing places. Continue on the lane until you get to the car park at the foot of the dam. Please note that there is NO PARKING on the approach roads, lane or in the lay byes and turning circles.

The race finish will be located by the car park on the A59 at Blubberhouses.
