Frequently asked questions

What are training sessions like?
Working with a partner and using pads you practice various techniques and combinations demonstrated by the instructor. The instructor(s) then go around the class helping people individually.

I've never done anything like this before. Does that matter?
Not at all. The Wednesday and Friday classes are suitable for everyone, aimed towards complete beginners. However, the structure of the classes allow for confident people to advance at their own pace too.

How much does it cost?
Annual membership is £3, after which individual sessions are £4.

Do I have to join the AU?
No. Unlike other martial arts clubs AU membership is NOT required, instantly saving you £35.

What should be worn?
Anything you can move about in easily, such as shorts + t-shirt. Boys please remember to wear tight boxers(!) Shoes do not matter as training is bare foot.

Do I have to bring my own boxing gloves / equipment?
No. The instructor provides all necessary equipment (pads etc). However some people choose to wear hand-wraps, which can be bought direct from the instructor.

Do a lot of women do Muay Thai?
Yes, the class is about 50% female.

How fit do I have to be?
There is no minimum required fitness, as the training sessions themselves will get you into shape.

Is Muay Thai good for improving fitness?
Yes, extremely good. You will almost certainly notice a big improvement in your fitness after only a few weeks.

Is Muay Thai good for self-protection?
Yes! You will learn how to apply the same techniques you would use in a ring to real life situations that might occur on the street or in a pub.

Do you compete / fight in a ring?
We run a sparring class on a friday after our normal session from 8-9:00pm and have also competed in a friendly interclub event agaisnt another uni. This allows people to get ring experince without it being quite as intense as a proffesional fight. So if you are interested in competing then the sparring class is a great way to improve your skills.

Are there social events?
Yes. Socials are a great way to get to know the people you train with, and usually involve an evening meal in a restaurant followed by a trip to some of the bars/clubs down Broad St. More info

Are there gradings?
Yes. Gradings are optional for those who are interested. There will be one at the end of each term, a great way to measure your progress and get a sense of achievement.
