TEAM SAILING

Birmingham University competes in team racing events throughout the year. We have two teams, both of which race at university events all over the UK and sail at BUSA. The past few years have seen Birmingham teams doing well. The 1st team made the BUSA playoffs in Glasgow in November 2007 and 2 Bronze medals were brought back from the national fleet racing championships. Our Ladies Team Racing team also attended BUSA finals in 2009.
We have a busy racing schedule and on weekends that we are not attending events there is training. These sessions are led by both the team captain and experienced members of the teams, who between them have a wealth of knowledge. Anna was a member of the youth GBR sailing squad and continues to coach them. Being part of the Birmingham university team involves a large commitment but is very rewarding. Long lasting friends are made not only with fellow team members but also with members of other university teams.
Team racing is a new concept to many sailors and so, a weekend at the beginning of October we organise a pre trial training weekend. This allows people to meet each other and learn about team racing. This weekend is followed by team trials. Two teams compromising of 6 people in each will be selected, but these teams are likely to change throughout the year. People who may not have initially made the team often sail for the University later on.
