What’s involved? We have eleven hours of pool training and two hours of land-based work a week. We train in our on-campus Munrow Sports Centre. There is no pressure on swimmers to make certain amounts of training but if you are selected to compete for the University then obviously we do expect greater commitment. One thing everyone will say about swimming for the University of Birmingham is that it is like no other team you have ever swam or will ever swim for again. We have swimmers who have been on elite national squads, and even the odd National Champion, but all agree this is the best team in terms of spirit and training they have ever been a part of. We encourage everyone to compete at some level. The teams we send to BUSA will be selected but everyone can enter open meets and other friendly galas. You’ll find sitting on poolside all weekend is far more fun than it used to be with the closest friends you’ll ever make at University..
What we’ve achievedThe team is improving rapidly with over 120 record breaking swims in two years.
Team SpiritOne thing that sets Birmingham apart from the rest is the
celebrated team spirit. No other team in BUSA (not even the Jocks) cheer &
support like the Brummies do. It’s a great laugh to swim with the team and the
socials are legendary. We go out on socials most weeks
and will be some of the best nights you’ll remember at uni.
We feel it is important to have fun with your swimming at university. Many swimmers who have quit swimming come to Brum and find out that swimming (and even training) can be a laugh and many take up the sport again. If you’ve ever been a swimmer before and quit because you were pushed too hard, or found better things to do or basically were too hung-over to go to morning training ever week then give the Brum Swim team a go – trust me, you won’t regret it. What competitions do we enter? The swim team competes in as many competitions as we can. BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) has three competitions a year with the Team Champs (bit like Speedo League) and the Long and Short course nationals. We also enter local open meets and regional championships (Midlands). Friendly competitions are also organised against other universities over the year to get everyone involved. Also as the team has progressed, our attendance at major nationals meets is becoming more and more frequent, and is constantly noticed by many of the Nation’s top coaches. We also have in house galas including the Alumni reunion and the Origin Gala. These galas are special in there own way as the Club has designed its own special system for how events are won and points awarded. This gives everyone the chance to win an event!!! All that is required is maximum effort from each competitor and a little bit of self improvement in terms of a PB and victory is almost assured. In the last two years the Top Male and Top Female in each Origin Gala have been part of the Club…Amazing!!! |
