Gary Humpage
Swimming Development Coordinator & Head Coach

Gary is the Head coach of the university swimming team and is also the coordinator of swimming for the University sports centre.

Gary has been coaching the University squad tirelessly since 1996 taking the squad to better and better performances, including this year's best ever results of BUSA Team Championship Bronze medal in Division 1 and Silver in Division 2.

He was recently awarded the Athletic Union Coach of the Year in acknowledgement of this remarkable achievement.

A born and bred Brummie, Gary began his swimming life at the City of Birmingham swimming squad among the likes of world-class athletes, Nick Gillingham and Adam Ruckwood. After making his best performances in reaching a British Final, Gary turned his attention to coaching.

Gary is a qualified ASA Club Coach and has coaching experience of both sides of the pond giving him a unique assessment of two very different styles of coaching from two very different countries.

Andrew Fieldhouse
Assistant Coach

Andrew has been working alongside Gary Humpage from 2008 while studying at the university. While undergoing his UKCC ASA Level 3 coaching qualification, Andrew is coaching at 2 other local swimming clubs besides having swum at national level. With his experience and expertise, Andrew's coaching with the club will provide the team the added needed support.

Chris Ross
Head Strength & Conditioning Coach

After working with the Performance Sport and Fitness Unit at the University of Birmingham, as a Strength and Conditioning Coach in 2004, Chris was appointed Head Strength and Conditioning Coach with the University in 2005. Along with other qualifications, Chris is BWLA qualified which links closely with his passionate interest in Olympic weightlifting and its close application to sport. Chris also takes an active interest in video analysis and periodisation. Chris has had significant experience providing support to elite British athletes across a wide range of sports also providing Strength and Conditioning support to the University’s Athletic Scholars.

Caroline Robertson
Performance Sports Scientist

Caroline is a Sports Science Officer within Performance Sport. She provides physiological support to TASS and University Scholars, Athletic Union members and external clients. This support includes physiological laboratory and field testing, nutritional advice and monitoring of hydration and body composition.

Caroline accompanies the squad on BUSA competitions and provides instant video analysis and race breakdown showing us the areas of strength and weakness in every event. She also provides the team with valuable underwater video analysis for stroke improvement.

Paul Brice
Sports Science Officer

Paul provides biomechanical support services for the many individuals and teams within the Athletic Union as well as external clients. Paul is also employed by the English Institute of Sport (EIS) in a unique dual funded position with the University. Paul will develop and implement a biomechanics strategy, to work alongside established disciplines, to enhance sporting excellence. He is also available to provide research seminars on any topics related to biomechanics, from technique improvements to comprehensive gait analysis.
