Triplex Night
Posted 31/3/2011
So, despite Bowlplex-related grief last year which meant we didn't have a Triplex, we
have finally had one. Congratulations to Bex who won with a score of 226. There was
some close competition, with a one point difference between Dom [171] and Nick [172]
for Eighth and Seventh place respectively, and Matt [181] and Mark B [182] for Fifth
and Fourth place respectively. We hope you enjoyed the competition, thanks to Matt for
providing sweets after the game - have a good Easter holiday everyone! 'Til next time
people.

The Annual Shenanigans at Nottingham
Posted 10/2/2011
So we've had our major annual competition with BUCS at Nottingham. A very well done to everyone who attended, a good laugh as always. A special thanks to Mr Angry from Portsmouth for taking the brunt of all our frustration and mockery.
The tournament scores are up so go and check those out, well done to Dom for coming in the top 50 of the Individual Mens. While updating these scores from last year, I saw almost universal improvement in pinfall and average from last year, so congratulations people, all your hard work and loyalty is paying off! Newbies, there's something to remember for yourselves. 'Til next time people.

The Last Week At Lakeside!
Posted 3/11/2010
Our last week at Lakeside! Shame it went bust, we'll have to find somewhere nearby which isn't too much hassle to get to. Aside from that, we had a good last night there for scores! Newcomer Nick took High Score of the Week, edging Dom by one pin. Other people with notable scores include Indy [174], Liz [168] and Bex [166]. Other achievements were Tom's new High Score of 125, and Ellen's new High Score of 113. Congratulations!
More shifting and shoving on the league table! Liz falls from joint-Second to Third which pushes Mark B and Bex down one place to Fourth and Fifth respectively. Indy stays in the same place at Sixth as Matt drops two places to Seventh. Mark J falls one place to Eigth and Ed falls to joint-Ninth with Lucy who hasn't moved. Simon M drops to Tenth, whilst John rises from Twelfth to Eleventh. Ellen rises two positions from joint-Fourteenth to Twelfth. Alex and Dave remain tied with each other, this time at joint-Thirteenth. Emma had a rather unfortunate night and so has dropped three places from Thirteenth to Sixteenth. Tom, with his new high score has risen four places from Eighteenth to Fourteenth, the biggest jump this week. Jay also rises two places to Fifteenth. I have removed people who don't turn up as it makes the table clearer and my job a lot easier. Next week is likely to be Bowlplex, so we'll let you know arrangements nearer the time. 'Til next time people.

The Lane Can Make All The Difference
Posted 27/10/2010
Another good night last night which a variety of scores being produced. Scores worth a mention are Dom's 160, Jack's 167 and Matt's great score of 174, awarding him High Score of the Week. Alex also got himself a new High Score of 118. A welcome to four visitors last night, Nick, Soroosh, Sam and Tom. I hope you enjoyed yourselves and that we'll see you again in the coming weeks!
The league table has also jumped around a bit this week. Dom stays in top; Jack and Liz now share joint-Second, shifting Mark B down one place to Third. Subsequently, Bex rises to Fourth place and Matt R gets to Fifth. Mark J falls one place to Seventh. This vacuum of space allows Indy to rise three places to Sixth! (Much better). After this, Lucy and Simon M share joint-Ninth, Whilst Dave, slips from Thirteenth to Fourteenth. This allows John and Alex to rise one place each, to Twelfth and joint-Fourteenth respectively. I wonder what next week will bring? 'Til next time people.

The Night of Some Amusing Nicknames
Posted 20/10/2010
Interesting night last night, some more impressive scores being produced! Jack [179], Dom [173] and Bex [160] are worth a mention. Also worth a very big mention is Ed's incredible score of 183, a new High Score for himself, High Score of the Week and a kick in the teeth for many of us oldies (mine included). We have a black horse amongst us, better watch out. Mark J also got himself a new High Score [165], bettering his previous by one pin.
It was good to see some of the newer faces reappearing last night as well, evidently we haven't scared them off just yet... Also, a note to remind the newbies that if they should want some informal training and tips on how to improve they can just ask any of us, or bellow loudly, whatever works best. 'Til next time people.

Then the Hoardes Descended Upon Us
Posted 13/10/2010
Welcome freshers! I was glad to see many of the faces I had remembered from the Society Fair turning up to Joe's. I hope you enjoyed yourselves! We look forward to seeing you in the weeks to come. Some good scores coming from you all, notably Mark J who lived up to his "Pro" image with a cool 164, but lost it again with a subsequent 108.
Dom takes High Score of the Week again [181], edging Jack's 180 by one pin. Liz also had a good night with scores of 169 and 155. The league table is quite substantially re-arranged when one fresher throws a spanner into the works. We oldies had better shape up. 'Til next time people.

Quick Quick, Before the Freshers Come!
Posted 06/10/2010
Welcome back! I hope you all had an enjoyable summer! So yes, we sneaked in a bit of practice before the freshers turned up, just to make sure they know who's boss. Dom started off the term with a bang by claiming High Score of the Week with 185. The rest of us, well not quite so impressive after the long break (he's clearly been practicing).
Also, a warm welcome to new member Ed, who turned up a week early and caught us red-handed trying to get an advantage over the freshers. Yeh... well... we regret nothing!
Other than that, we look forward to next week when some new people will turn up, and hopefully stay on to become new members! Let's hope our sneaky practice beforehand will be worth it, our reputations are at stake here! 'Til next time people.

End of Term, End of Exams, End of Year! Bring the Summer!
Posted 09/06/2010
So, it's the end of the bowling term already! We've had some fantastic scores (and laughs most importantly) and I've thoroughly enjoyed being your secretary (for now). Matt claimed High Score of the Week with an impressive 173. Jay reappeared out of nowhere for the last session and got a new High Score of 144, very well done.
So, league results. Dom takes First Place with an average of 158, a clear winner this time ahead of Jack, who came second with an average of 142 and third was Matt with 139. Congratulations to our Gold, Silver and Bronze competitors! Joint fourth was Mark and Indy at 134, with Mark technically beating me by half a pin average - knowing the speed he chucks it, there could well be half a pin lying around. Liz got into fifth place with 126. Bex and Mark can take the title of Most Dedicated Members, since they did not miss a session this term.
The rest of the results are available on the tab to the left. If you would like a very colourful spreadsheet of all
your scores this term, to do maths with, or lament that extra average that could have been,
you can email or Facebook me and ask for it within this next week. I'm leaving to go gallivanting
around Europe for 10 weeks on the 19th June, so I won't be around after that! Indy is living up to his name
and going to do some archaeology out in Eastern Europe, (not beating up Nazis). I hope you all enjoy your summers
and I wish you a relaxing break after what has no doubt been a long year for everyone... maybe even the First Years.
'Til next year people.

The Week That The Coke Was Good
Posted 02/06/2010
***ANNOUNCEMENT***
----- Now, this rather odd title is in honour of the good Coke we actually got from the alley that night. Usually, it's either flat, full of ice or watered-down or a combination of all three. I don't usually buy from the alley (who needs it when there's Pizzaland?) so it is noteworthy in this eccentric mind of mine. Anyway, so I guess you'd like to hear about some bowling. Well, we had two guests last night, George and Stu, who *appeared* to enjoy themselves. We can only hope they were not scared by tales of Magic Chalkballs and performance-enhancing Skittles. We had a new High Score from Jake, with 145 - also the first time in a while he's turned up; he's not the only ones the exams have claimed. Paul picked up High Score of the Week this week with 158, just edging Mark and myself who each got 157.

Put A Sock* In It!
Posted 26/05/2010
Well we had an interesting night last night! In between me telling certain members of the public with RIDICULOUS laughs (like really), to insert certain objects* (the title has been changed to something more tame) into their mouths and Dom joining the gods, there was much Skittle gnoshing and snack-attacking going on. Sounds like a good Tuesday night to me. So, as somewhat hinted above, Dom did well again last night, with another clinching of High Score of the Week with 214 in the first game, followed by a 188 in the third game. The next highest came from Mark [162] and Indy [151]. We clearly have a bit of catching up to do. Connell also managed to get himself a new High Score of 132, pipping his last by 1 pin. Congratulations, every little helps! (Damn you for influencing me, Tesco). My epic return to victory against Simon M is also worth mentioning, (and even if it's not, I have the power to anyway) coming from 37 in the 5th frame to first with 137.

Free Chips! Or 'They Are When You Eat Paul's While He's Bowling'
Posted 19/05/2010
This was much more lively, due to the return of Paul, our resident "Chalkball Thrower". Dark coloured clothing not recommended. Dom got another incredible score of 204, claiming the High Score of the Week in the process. Meanwhile, the rest of us mortals were doing okay, Jack got 180 and a new High Score for himself, as did Ross with 114.
-- Indy
This Shall Be the Title Since I Can't Think of One
Posted 12/05/2010
Not much to report this week. I remember everyone being quite subdued, even the dose of Skittles didn't particularly inspire me. Damn you, exams. Connell got a new High Score of 131 - the benefit of being a Masters student. High Score of the Week goes to Liz with 161. Let's hope the depression lifts by next week! I'll be finished anyway. Mwah. 'Til next time people. -- Indy
Exams? What Exams?
Posted 05/05/2010
People are obviously feeling confident to blow off revision for an extra week before the exams really kick in. Good for us, we had a fairly solid turnout considering the circumstances. Lucy achieved a new High Score of 168 so congratulations for that, there were also three other scores in the 160s last night: Mark [169], Bex [167], Indy [163]. High Score of the Week goes to Mark, who just pipped Lucy by 1. Nothing else of note particularly happened, I was on my usual Skittle high after my first game, and they obviously beyond all reasonable doubt contributed to my good score. By the end of the term, 20ps will be worth their weight in gold, you'll see. 'Til next time people. -- Indy
Indiana Jones and The First Update of the New Term
Posted 28/04/2010
Hello! Did you all have a good Easter? Good, glad to hear it. Anyway, yes. I am here, your new secretary is ready to make this THE most incredible web experience that a bowling society has ever had in... ever. Well, not really, but you might find it entertains you for a few minutes as you sit there, wasting time as you are into the fifth hour of writing your essay which is due...
Or, you might actually purposefully look at this page for no other reason than your dedication to the society
(with hope perhaps of a mention of any greatness that might have occured). I will do my best to keep the updates
interesting and maintain this Enough prattling. 'Twas the week before exams... and it started with a bang! Dom produced a stunning set of scores, 194, 176 and 194 again. This was also the High Score of the Week. Good start to the new term for him, I'm sure he's making certain after a performance like that, that Jack hasn't a hope in hell of snickin into First Place like last time. Bex brought out a 172 in her second game, as well as Matt getting 167, tough competition between that lane. It's the Magic Chalkball, I tell you. Connell also got himself a new High Score of 126, so congratulations there. Other than that, there are no amusing anecdotes to report, since I wasn't actually there. But, I will be there next week, prowling for things to write about. You have been warned. 'Til next time people. -- Indy
Triplexiness
Posted 25/03/2010
This is my last ever website update. I'd better make it a good one. In a move that will undoubtedly enrage Dom and nearly completely ruined the HTML for the pretty table pattern Tony's provided me with, Jack turned up last week and, er, took first place in the league table with just three games. Sorry Dom. Apart from everyone being shunted down one place, Simon E and Paul have both gone up by one place, and Simon E has got a new excellent high score of 173. Get him. To my incessant annoyance and rage, Jake has managed to beat my average by the total of...wait for it...0.06 pins. NNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO- Anyway, ignoring me, this was the last week of term and so that meant COMPETITION. This time it was a Triplex, which means...okay just look at last week's news update. The three best Triplex scores got Easter eggs, courtesy of the Lizmeister, and these people were: Jack - 234 Liz (typical) - 212 Simon E - 210 There were also prizes for whoever could get closest to the magical mystery number of...189. Which was technically Dom, with 190, but Dom isn't allowed another bowling ball so the ball went to MARK! The best scores for Individual Game and Series also received Easter eggs, but unfortunately I have now got completely confused over who got two eggs so I'm not entirely sure who actually got one. Anyone who did not get a big choccy egg were instead allowed a little one, or two if they were quick enough. Yum. And finally, the turkey dance was out in force for both Liz and Simon E. I have just realised that for my last stint as website updater I was going to force all of you to perform the turkey dance for a photo, but I forgot. So you've all escaped this time...but be afraid. Be very afraid. Well I guess this is all I can babble on about for this week. Bowling should be back on after Easter - pah, who needs revision. So I shall see you all then, but for now - it has been an excellent year writing nonsense on this website and thank you to whoever bothered to read any of it. Goodbye, so long, and farewellllllllll... -- Lucy
New Committee!
Posted 18/03/2010
Yes guys, thanks to a good old democratic vote - and again, writing 'The People That Want It' does not count - we now have a new committee. Thank you to the 11 members who came to bowling and stayed behind to take part in the AGM, and thank you to everyone who nominated themselves. For anyone who wasn't there, your new committee is...(drumroll)... President - Matt Treasurer - Bex Secretary - Simon E Since the handover meeting isn't until next week, Liz, Simon and I will probably do the next bowling sesh and the next website update, and then THE POWER IS IN YOUR HANDS. No abusing it. If you all become corrupt I will be...very annoyed. So there. NEXT WEEKETH: We are planning a Triplex competition for the last bowling of this term. A Triplex is where you play three games and then take the best score from each frame to create your best game. So you only end up with one score at the end. E.g. if you got 6 pins in Frame 1 of your first game, 9 pins in Frame 1 of your second game, and then 1 pin in Frame 1 of your third game (because someone threw a chalk ball at the back of your head), then you would take the score of 9 from your second game. Okay I explained that terribly. Just go and bug Liz next week. Anyway, there should be prizes for this. There may even be a prize of a FREE BOWLING BALL, although if you already have a bowling ball then it wouldn't really be fair if we gave you another one. Sorry Dom. This prize might be for whoever gets a score closest to a mystery number (ooh er), so have hope people, IT COULD BE YOU. Crikey, I nearly forgot to do the sum-up for this week's bowling. Bad Secretary. Must be getting old. Tuesday 16th March Dom is still hanging on to the top of the league by miles, but Mark's average is now only a point behind Liz's - look out, McCann. Otherwise there are new high scores for Matt, with an excellent 195, and Jay with a great 140. Best scores of the week go to Matt obviously, Liz (180), Mark (177) and Dom (169). -- Lucy
Two Week Update of Awesome
Posted 11/03/2010
Sorry about the lack of update last week. I'm tempted to blame Dom but it's pretty much my fault for being too lazy to wait for the last lane to finish :D. Instead, here is an update for the last two weeks: Tuesday 2nd March Best score of the night came from Mark with 168, who moved up to second place on the league table. After Mark came Liz with 156, Dom with 155, Paul with 145 and Bex with 140. Well done to Connell for getting a new high score! Tuesday 9th March Dom got some excellent scores this week, with an amazing 208 in his first game and 168 in his third. Liz also did well, gaining 165 and second place in the league again. Sorry Mark. Other great scores of the night came from Bex with 176, Paul with 170, Matt with 150, Mark with 144 and Jake with 142. Jake had a particularly good night this week, meaning that he's now gone up by three places in the league table, and Paul has also gone up by two places over the last two weeks, so congrats to both of you. AGM! You should probably have already heard about this; if not, check your inbox. We are having the society AGM next Tuesday (that's the 16th, not the 15th as I wrote in the email for some reason), after the normal three games, and we'd like as many people to come as possible because during the AGM we will be electing THE NEW COMMITTEE. Yes, I'm afraid you will no longer be tormented by insane website updates from me. As my last act of 'Website Girl' I am considering forcing every member of the society to do the turkey dance for a photo, so be prepared. But anyway, before I go off on a tangent - ELECTIONS. We need at least a President, Treasurer and Secretary in order for the society to run. If you'd like to have a go at any of these then please email me before next Tuesday! If you're unsure, take it from me - I've had a great time being on the committee and I do recommend it. We will all be around next year anyway so if you ever get stuck about something then you can always ask us! If you'd like any more information then have a look at the email or ask one of us. Even if you don't want to go for a committee position, please come next week to vote in the election! See you next week... -- Lucy
Nottingham Scores and Photos
Posted 24/02/2010
BUCS scores are up! Men's team A came 20th while Men's team B came 22nd, and the Women's team came 7th. Everyone's individual scores are now on the Tournament page, but if you want to see the full BUCS results then have a look at the link heeerrrre... I've also put some of the Nottingham photos up on the Photos page. If you're enraged at how I have stolen your photos from Facebook, let me know and I'll take them down. In other news...Dom is still doing amazingly well, refusing to let anyone get near him on the league table and gaining a new high score of 220. Bex, Jay and Simon E also got new high scores this week (184, 158 and 139), so well done to you all. Other than that hardly anyone has moved around on the table. All that's actually happened is that three pairs of people swapped places with each other. Wow. On the horizon is something more serious. It's coming up to the time when Liz, Simon and I should be stepping down from being on the committee...well, basically we should be doing that before Easter. Please have a think about whether you'd be interested to be on the committee for next year, as no committee members means no society. Argh. We'll be emailing you with more information sometime soon. -- Lucy
Après Notts
Posted 17/02/2010
Thank you to everyone who came to Nottingham! I hope you all enjoyed it and weren't too put off by scary competitive people. BUCS haven't put the scores up yet, but when they do I'll upload them on here. I have managed to forget to ask for last week's scores (sorry Edmonds) so I'm afraid only this week's are going up. Best scores of the night came from Liz (188), Andy (175), Mark (170), Dom (167) and Bex (158), and Liz and Bex now have new high scores so congrats to them. Liz and Andy also both got turkeys, and although Liz assures me that she apparently did one, I can't actually remember Andy doing one. Andy was actually rather close to reaching the mystical feat of a double turkey, after getting five strikes in a row, which would have meant (drumroll) DOUBLE TURKEY DANCE. Although I haven't got a clue what a double turkey dance is supposed to look like. Only that it should be epic. Until next week and beyond... -- Lucy
One week to Nottingham...
Posted 05/02/2010
There appears to be no stopping Dom, who remains at the top of the league table, but Liz has now crept into second place with a new high score of 174. Simon M has also risen 3 places in the league, and Paul is now 5th after going up by 2. Jake and Matt have also gone up by 1 place. It was a great week for some people (definitely not me hahaha) because there are now 5 new high scores - Liz (174), Simon M (154), Jake (144), Simon E (140) and Connell (104). Well done to all of you - better keep it up for next weekend in Nottingham! (Blimey that crept up quick). Expect either an email soon asking you to give Liz the money next Tuesday, or we might actually just take it from you on Friday itself. More information when I update next week. -- Lucy
Australia Day!*
Posted 28/01/2010
(yes, some of you may have been expecting that) Dom is still reigning over the league table, after having got the best score of the year so far - 201! Good lord. There were also lots of new high scores. Paul has to be mentioned for his first game of 189, which he attributed to 'Australia Day'. Actually, he attributed quite a lot to Australia Day. To the point that the sound of him yelling those two words appears to be permanently embedded into my skull. Anyway, Mark also did well with 158, and new high scores go to Dom (obviously), Liz (159), Paul (189) and Jay (126). The turkey dance was also gloriously back in force. THERE IS NO ESCAPE. We now have a hotel and train tickets for Nottingham. The hotel cost quite a bit more than expected so it will probably be more than £30 now, maybe £35. We will let you know as soon as possible! * 'Australia Day' apparently means cheap Fosters and Simon M managing to get a spiffy hat. Jealous. -- Lucy
And Lucy Fails Miserably To Think of a Title
Posted 21/01/2010
Nottingham Update Thanks to everyone for paying the Club Development Fee – we are now ENTERED. Which is good because today was the deadline. We’re now booking the hotel and buying train tickets, so if I’ve sent you an email (Bex and Paul) please please can you reply to it as soon as possible so I know how many people have railcards? (Yes I know I already bugged you both about it, but I forgot to write your answers down. Idiot.) This Week Dom had an absolutely spectacular week, with scores of 153, 151 and 150, and as a result he’s gone straight to the top of the league table. Matt’s also gone up by five places after getting 177, and Mark similarly had a very good game with 163. Well done to Jake and Paul as well for getting new high scores (138 and 145). -- Lucy
Crikey, it's 2010
Posted 14/01/2010
Tuesday marked the first bowling night of 2010 and the first bowling night of this semester, which means A COMPLETELY NEW LEAGUE TABLE. As a result practically everyone has changed places. Mark is now at the top, with an average for Tuesday night of 151 and a rather awesome 2nd game, scoring 182. Liz also scored well as usual with an average of 136, as well as Dom with a great 3rd game, scoring 173, and Bex with an average of 132. I also updated the Tournament section of this website to include the scores from last semester's mini competition, so if you're mildly interested or have forgotten...they're there. We're currently trying to sort out Nottingham stuff - we should have two teams of guys and one team of girls. I've already annoyed everyone with an email about this, but if you want to go you need to pay a Club Development Fee of £10 at the Munrow reception. All you have to do is tell them you're in the society and you've been told to pay this, and they'll get you to fill out a small form, look at your uni card and take the money. BUT this needs to be done by Friday 15th January - no later, because the deadline for actually entering Notts is getting rather perilously near. Friday. If you have not done it go now. Well not if you're reading this in the middle of the night and Munrow is closed. BUT OTHERWISE GO. Anyway, now I've terrified you all I shall go. Remember, if you want a bowling shirt, never mind if you're going to Nottingham or not, let us know by next Tuesday. It's £17 for a normal shirt, £20 with your name rather spiffingly on the back. Until next week! -- Lucy
So Long, Farewell...for now
Posted 09/12/2009
The end of term awaiteth, so last night was the last ever bowling OF 2009. Crikey. So, naturally, everyone who turned up was subjected to a mini competition. We tried to divide the teams up fairly, and we discounted Will's score from The Pinheads' series so no accusations of foul play... THE RESULTS WERE: * SLAM (Amanda, Simon M, Matt and Liz) - 1406 * Team Awesome (Paul, Bex, Simon E and Tom) - 1224 * The Pinheads (Jack, Lucy, Dom and Jay) - 1452 Best Individual Series went to Liz with 459, with Jack in 2nd place with 431 and, er, me in 3rd with 405. Hope you enjoyed your prizes, guys. A certain chocolate shop was definitely appreciative. Otherwise there were two occurences of the turkey dance, one by Bex (congratulations) and one by my housemate Will, who has probably been scared enough by it to never want to return. Best scores of the night came from Jack with 170, Liz with 166, Paul with 150, Dom with 144 and Matt with 142. Finally, well done to Liz, Amanda and Tom, who all got new high scores last night, and in particular to Amanda who has gone up a place in the league table. It's goodbye for this year, but we'll be back again next term - I'll probably be sending an email around in January revealing what week we're starting and with more news on the shirts. Have a fantastic Christmas and see you all next year. -- Lucy
More Nonsensical Babble from Lucy
Posted 02/12/2009
Numbers are slightly dwindling now it’s getting pretty damn cold outside, but make sure you turn up next week – we’re having a mini competition with PRIZES, and we’re planning to all go to the pub again afterwards, so go on, brave the temperature. Jake was having a great week this week, going up by three places in the league table and gaining a new high score of 130 – well done! Bex also got a new high score, and the best scores of the night came from Jack, who refused to leave the top of the league table and managed to decimate everyone with a score of 169. Jack was followed by Bex and Liz with 154 and Dom with 145. Liz, watch out. Mark B’s average is only one point behind youuu… I am about to send you all an epic email about this anyway, but just briefly: SPIFFING! Time to order some shirts. We’re offering people the chance to buy an awesome bowling shirt. They’re going to be the same Kukri ones some of us were wearing in the first few weeks, and if you’d like to be reminded of what they look like then here is a convenient picture of a lot of people wearing them:
A normal shirt is £17, and one with your name on the back is £20. If you’d like to buy one let us know next week or sometime before the first week of term so we can order them. OH YES, THE RETURN OF NOTTINGHAM MALARKY The BUSA competition in Nottingham is, as mentioned last week, on the 13th-14th February 2010, and at the moment we’re trying to figure out how much things are going to cost. For this reason, we need to find out how many people are interested in going. If you sort of want to go and you didn’t tell us so last Tuesday, please send me an email so we can work out numbers. Even if it’s just a maybe we need to know so we can find out how much we can subsidise things and give you a rough price. We’ll be asking you all in January for definite if you want to go, so if you change your mind you can drop out then, but it really is going to be a good weekend and we’re hoping you have a great time. If you need more details, have a look at the email I’m about to send or just ask one of us. That’s all from me for now, so see you soon and good luck in next week’s competition. -- Lucy
Curse You, Boring League Table, and The Beginnings of Nottingham Malarky Time
Posted 25/11/2009
Since apparently the lanes were dire last week, and someone didn't get the scoresheets for me because of it (you cheat, Liz), only the scores for this week are getting added to the league table. Which hasn't actually changed that much, really; we seem to be getting more consistent. Luke got a new high score of 155, and Warren had a pretty good run of 131 and 134, meaning he's gone up one place in the league table. Yes guys, this is how unexcitingly little the league table has changed. Best scores of the night were 160 and 151 from that annoying Liz girl, 155 (as already said) from Luke, 148 from Matt, 137 from Bex and 136 from that even more annoying Paul. Now, perhaps slightly more exciting news: we're planning to enter the BUSA competition in Nottingham next year, and we've just found out that it's on the weekend of the 13th-14th February. So expect to get bombarded with emails soon asking if you'd like to come, so we can start trying to sort it out. We'll leave in the evening of Friday 12th and come back in the evening of Sunday 14th, so if you think you can make that rather in advance date then go onnnn. I can't actually recommend it enough. There will be bowling. There will be drinking. There will be, erm, going out for a meal-ing. AND THERE WILL HOPEFULLY BE BOWLING SHIRTS. SHIRTS, GUYS, COME ON. I'd better stop writing about it until we've actually figured out a lot of the stuff (including how to actually buy said shirts I've just boasted about), but have a think about it, and expect emails. We should be having an end-of-term meal at the...well, end of term, so expect emails about that too actually. Until next week, farewell... -- Lucy
Slightly More Belated Than I Thought...
Posted 16/11/2009
Well, I fully intended to update this sooner than now. Unfortunately thanks to illness I haven't been able to leave the house properly until today, let alone get to the Guild. HOWEVER I am back now, so here goes two weeks' worth of bowling updates... 03/11/09 - It was kinda a down week for a lot of people; I know it was for me. I am rather tempted to use Simon E's excuse of 'the lanes were crap', even if I'm not entirely sure whether to believe it. However there were still some pretty awesome scores coming out. Top score came from Paul, with 177, and that was DESPITE attacking me so much that I ended up imagining pokes out of sheer paranoia. Mark B followed with 169, Bex with 153, Simon M with 149, Luke with 143 and Warren with 140. Bex in particular went up by five places in the league table that week, congratulations! We also had our first social that night, where we all ended up back at the Goose again for the second time that evening. Hope you all enjoyed it; I certainly enjoyed having Malibu and Cokes bought for me (HINT HINT). 10/11/09 – People seemed to be doing much better this week. Paul AGAIN got the best score (186), followed by Mark B (174, beating his high score), 163 from Matt and 160 from Dom. Well done guys, although I'm still rather dismayed at Matt for his lack of dancing after his three strikes. Be ashamed. Also, welcome back Mark Richens – nice to see you again - and thank you very much Mark Blevins for giving us lazy people a lift afterwards. (I hope that wasn’t an attempt to bribe the treasurer and the secretary) League Table Changes - Over the last two weeks, Bex has moved up by six places, Matt has moved up the league table by five places, and Simon E has moved up by four. -- Lucy
Deluged by Turkey Dancing
Posted 28/10/2009
Despite a large amount of random craziness including me being the helpless victim of a hell of a lot of pokes (NOT APPRECIATED, GUYS), there was some pretty good bowling going on last night. The best score came from Alex with 154 (and no, I’m not listening to your excuses; that third game is going on your average), followed by Simon E with 152 (much to my chagrin), Mark with 151, Liz and Paul with 150 and Dom with 148. The turkey dance was also gloriously back, with Mark having to go through it a second week, and Simon E managing to have to do it twice. Jeez, I’d almost think they liked having to dance like that. There were quite a few new people at bowling last night; hope some of you want to come back! We did manage to get two more members in the midst of it, including Paul which is about blimmin' time. Bowling is on again next week as usual. I should be there but, no matter how great and undying my love is for the society and this website, there's very little chance I'm going to bother to go to uni during reading week. So expect the next update on here to be in two weeks' time. I know, it’s terrible having to wait that long to see your average, but I’m lazy. -- Lucy

It was a rather miserable day yesterday in the land of Selly Oak, so it was a test of dedication to see whether anyone would actually turn up to bowling. Thankfully we did have quite a few loyal subjects and managed to cover three lanes. For the third time in a row it was my lane that took longer than the others to finish, which looks ever-so-slightly suspicious on my part; hopefully we’ll engineer it so one week we all actually end the last game at the same time. Yesterday we managed to subject our first victim to the turkey dance. Mark attempted to cop out of doing it for his first three strikes in a row, but then he went and did it again, and this time there was no excuse. Congratulations, Mark – for those turkeys, you’re now third on the league table, with the best score of the night of 173. Jack and Liz are still at the top with averages of 153 and 145 (you scary people, you). And finally well done to Dom for moving up the table five places and getting a new high score of 131. Bowling is on again the same time next week – 5.45 at the Goose, 6.30 at Lakeside. It’s reading week the week after for awesome people doing arts subjects but I'm assuming we’re probably carrying on that week regardless. -- Lucy
And So The Score Table Beganneth
Posted 14/10/2009
Well it was a rather crazy night at bowling this week, what with most of the people on Lane 7 having to dodge a flying chalk ball every few minutes, and quite a few people suddenly turning up late and having to be added on. We also have two more members (hello Shell and Luke), a rather annoying refusal to join (Paul) and a spy from Birmingham City Uni (kidding, Neville). Now we’ve had the practice week there are no more excuses, so I’ve taken down the old score table on League Scores and updated it with everyone’s averages and high scores from the first night. This’ll get updated every week, so keep checking to see how you’re doing. If you’re one of the guys from last year who trembles at the thought of their high score from before being deleted off the internet forever, then the entire old website and score tables should hopefully now be on the 2008/09 link at the side (as long as I haven't screwed up the HTML). Best scores of the night came from Andy, who came out of nowhere with a jawdropping 212, Jack with 162, Liz with 161 and Neville with 155. Jack and Liz are now neck-to-neck at the top of the league table with the same average of 151 (here comes rivalry). I also happened to notice two occurrences of turkeys (three strikes in a row) on the scoresheet – WHERE WAS THE TURKEY DANCE, PEOPLE. WHERE. Although to be honest probably neither Jack nor Andy actually know about the turkey dance, BUT STILL. Next week it will be enforced. Thank you to the people who coughed up the membership money this week – we now only have one debtor left. Think that’s all I can possibly blather on about, so goodbye, farewell, and see you next week. -- Lucy
Drumroll for the Incredibly Unimaginative Title - Week 1
Posted 12/10/2009
Well it took me stupidly long to update the website after the first week. Bad. Thank you to everyone who turned up to our first night and joined! We hope you enjoyed it enough to come back again next week. I'm afraid I didn't get to meet everyone properly but I should hopefully do so next week, when I'm acting a little less crazy and not badgering people for pens. I've sent an email round about next week but since some people didn't have email addresses or the emails bounced, here are the details - we're meeting at the Goose pub in Selly Oak at 5.45. If you have absolutely no clue where the Goose is then please have a look at the About page for a map, retrace our steps from last week (it's the first pub you come to on Bristol Road) or alternatively email me in dire straits. If you want to meet us at Lakeside, we'll be there by 6.30. It's £6 for the three games, £7 if you're not a member, and an extra £5 if you joined but didn't give us the membership money. We know who you are. Anyway, onto the part that's actually interesting - SCORES. Since it was a try-out night and people are probably rusty I'm going to hold off on uploading the scores until next week, but after that I'll be putting high scores and averages up every week. HOWEVER: the best scorers of the night were Jack, Lam and Dom, with averages of 149, 146 and 129. Jack also got the best single score, clocking up an amazing 191 in his third game, and Bim did fantastic too with a score of 173 in his second game - well done to you both. Finally congrats to Jay, with an average of 125 – someone’s obviously been practicing, sneaky. Au revoir until tomorrow, unless I end up spamming everyone with emails again. Oh the joy of being The Secretary (thunderclap). -- Lucy

So it’s a new year, new committee, and guess what – you’re stuck with me writing the website now. Be afraid. Anyway, to anyone new reading this, my name’s Lucy and I’m the secretary for the society. Liz is our president and Simon is the treasurer, and if you want to contact any of us then our details are on the Committee page. We’re a small friendly group that simply just meet up every Tuesday and have three games of bowling. We meet at 5.45pm at the Goose pub on Bristol Road in Selly Oak and walk to Lakeside Bowl in Stirchley. We’re not particularly competitive and more of a social club so no matter how bad you think you are, come along anyway. If you are one of those scary competitive people, then we’ll hopefully be going to the BUSA bowling competition in Nottingham next year, which is a great weekend and a lot of fun, but more information on that nearer the time. For our first week (Tuesday 6th October) we’re having a special deal of only £2 for THREE GAMES OF BOWLING. Yes, TWO QUID. Go onnnn, you know you want to. If you are tempted by my utterly amazing attempt at persuading you, then just turn up at Joe’s bar at the Guild at 5.30pm and look for the people wearing bowling shirts. If you like and want to join, you can become a member of the society for just £5, which gets you the excellent deal of £6 for three games each week, a place on our scoring table and a rather nifty piece of card from the Guild that says you’re a member. If you need any more information, feel free to contact us. Hoping to see you on the 6th! -- Lucy

Well. Scores are up, amazingly. Took me long enough, between laziness and getting a computer in the Guild basement. Such is life, anyhoo. Lucy pulled out an impressive 436 series, though, and Simon performed nicely with a 371. In fact, everyone averaged over 100 in their games, so really it was a pretty good week. If you're REALLY curious, you can grab the .xls of the scores for the last year in their raw, unabridged form here. Probably a good idea to read the "Global Scores" tab at the bottom, since that's an amalgamation of the entire year's league scores in one handy, dandy, difficult-to-read spreadsheet. The standard deviation column, in case you never did any statistics, is basically how consistent you were, lower being better. Amazingly, I wasn't the least consistent, although it felt it at times. Nothing really more to add, other than this is the last time I get to do this. Hell, even my trusty USB key gave out like the House of Usher, except without the whole being-murdered-by-dead-sisters thing. The end of an era in all senses of the word, I suppose. I guess I'll end on this, then: best of luck for next year, guys, especially if I don't see you again. Good bowling! -- Tony

Nothing much to say, today. No one's decided to bomb Stirchley, so PERHAPS THE LAST BOWLING EVER for some of us is on as normal for next week, although that being said I can only think of two people that are actually leaving. So PERHAPS THE LAST BOWLING EVER UNTIL MAYBE OCTOBER IF YOU JOIN AGAIN for most of you. You should join. It's fun. Now, scores. Once again we have shown "consistency" isn't exactly in our dictionaries, since we were all over the shop this week. Simon and Lucy had highs of 150 and 143 respectively, but considering that Simon's total was 351 and he came top by two pins, well... it's pretty obvious how mediocre we all were. And now I'm off, because Lucy didn't turn up so I can't teach her about the SCIENCE that goes on under these very, very pretty pages. -- Tony

Well, for the most part the exams are over and there are about two and a half weeks of term left. Some of us are not quite finished, but we'll see. On to the scores, then. No-one did particularly well, it must be said - Paul did the best out of everyone with a 378 series, which was surprising considering everyone else included Matt. I guess everyone's still kind of recovering from exams. I know I am. In regards to next week, we'll be starting at the earlier time of 4:30 due to someone booking the lanes we use decades in advance, or something. I wasn't paying a huge amount of attention, but I know that we'll be leaving the Goose at the earlier time of 4:00 pm. Be there. Now I must eat and do cousework. Fun. -- Tony

Yeah, that's our league pinfall for this last academic year, of which I am responsible for about 7% if only by virtue of attending every week. Matt, Jazz, Luke, Liz and Paul are the next five, each with over 6%. Can you tell I'm bored? In terms of scores this week, well... Matt crushed us all under his short stubby claws with a 481 series. The rest of us? Not even close. Since there were only five of us I can't really say anything else. Bowling, for the record, will resume on the 2nd of June, hopefully after most of us will have finished exams. I don't know who's still going to be around then, because I daresay most of you will be running off home the first chance you get. But hey. Nothing else of importance, so I'll finish with this: Good luck in your exams, guys. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to buy crap to eat and start learning about maths. -- Tony
Well, I'm Back Again

Thought you could get rid of me, eh? Truth be told I'm only updaing the website at the moment because I've sort of made it totally inaccessible to the new committee. Maybe I can sort that out before I vanish forever, but we'll see. On with the scores. Simon M and Matt both showed us how it was done this week, with a 393 and 382 resspectively. Jay also seems to have been practicing, bumping up his average so far by ten compared to the other two semesters. Early days yet, but let's hope it continues. And also that he talks a bit more. Bowling's definitely on next Tuesday, but from then on it'll be a bit sporadic, I'm afraid. I for one have a lot of exams on the third week of the semester, but after that I should be able to turn up for a little R&R (and teeth-grinding frustration). I don't know about anyone else, though. Depends on how dedicated / foolish you feel like being. 'Til next week! -- Tony

I'm sitting around in the Guild basement typing this. There's no-one around. Somehow, I'm not surprised. See, these are the lengths I go to to provide top-quality webpages for you. A few things before I bog off home. Bowling scores: up as usual. Better now than next semester at any rate. Not a particularly overwhelming week, it had to be said, although Russel pulled out a 393 series and Liz a 474, and in general everyone was hovering around the early-to-mid 300s. We WILL be bowling next term, although I can't see many people turning up, being it the exam period. Rest assured if you want to relieve stress by whanging heavy balls at sticks then I'll be in the Goose as normal, because I'm that dedicated. Or possibly stupid. Oh, and photos from Wednesday are up for you to laugh at. I'm hungry now. Have a good Easter, dudes. -- Tony

Oh god I'm so slow sometimes, but what can you do? Nothing but wait patiently. In terms of bowling, everyone started out well, but by towards the third games we sort of fell apart in a spectacular display of suck. That being said, Liz, Matt, Andrew H and Simon J had a few impressive games, especially since one of the above hasn't actually turned up until now. The lazy sod. Gonna keep this brief, but bowling WILL be on next week as normal. That much is sure, but there are plans to go out for a meal at some indeterminate point in the future before we split for Easter. Provisionally this is on the Wednesday, although I haven't heard any more about that. News as and when it breaks. I don't know why I'm still doing this. Not my job anymore. -- Tony

Triplex scores are up, now. In case you missed the song-and-dance about it, Liz won top female, Matt and Luke won joint top male, Simon E won the who-can-get-closest-to-an-arbitrary-score prize (which turned out to be 186) and Jess won the "Triplex Failure :)" award. Good times all round, since everyone promptly gorged on chocolate. Overall the bowling wasn't stellar, although newcomer Thomas managed to pull out a 430 series, with a high score of 191, beating Luke's 424 and Jazz's 423. Despite only being third, Jazz did manage to pull out a 190, a new high score for this term. Simon E also produced a 148 and Luke a 169, and we had a few turkeys as well. So congratulations for that. Continuing the theme of end-of-semester nicknames and general stupidity, Matt suggested the idea of porn star names for next week. Points for creativity around, 'cause "Bob Smith" isn't exactly the best name ever, it has to be said. At some point, there'll be a social at the end of term, so keep an ear out for that. And a few pennies aside too. And as a final, final note, there are now numerous photos on the photos page. Badly hand-picked by yours truly and not guaranteed to be any good. If you've got more, feel free to send 'em my way and I'll shove 'em up. The ones there at the moment are ripped straight from Facebook, so there. And yes, it looks wank on IE. That's because IE sucks. Dosvidanya! -- Tony

Yeah, I'm a retard. But enough about that. Our mini Triplex tournament turned out pretty well, I think. Aside from a few shockers a few people had a couple of good games, with the sort of people who bowl well normally bowling well. Which isn't all that surprising. I've gone through the scores and double-checked them, and aside from a few mistakes they've gone through largely unchanged. And the people who would have won prizes have still won prizes. I'll release the scores next week, during the "oh, hey, have a prize" thing. Lastly, it was good to get the AGM sorted, and by the looks of things the victories were landslides, on the virtue of not having anyone to run against. So pre-emptive congratulations to those who ran. Oh, and the tournament and league scores are now on separate pages. Hurrah. And the link for the full results for Nottingham are available here. -- Tony

Sorry about the delays. Scores from Nottingham, alongside the normal league scores, are up in the usual place. Two things of note. First off, we were supposed to hold the AGM for next year's positions on Tuesday, but the turnout was abysmal and we didn't have our president, so they've been postponed until next week. If you want to run, e-mail Shona, because she's sorting it out. Secondly, next week we're going to be running a Triplex tournament thingy. If you don't know what that is, don't worry because we'll explain on the day. Suffice to say this'll replace the normal end-of-term tournament we do because our numbers have been so lackluster recently, but rest assured you'll still win fabulous prizes and the admiration of your peers. Well, at least the prizes. 'Till Tuesday! -- Tony

Well, we're back. Sorry about the delay, I got a bit lazy. First of all, Nottingham. It was a good weekend for us all, even if the bowling wasn't exactly wun-wun-wunderbar. That might have been due to the inexorable alcohol consumption on the Friday night! And on the Sunday, well... it's hard to bowl when you're still semi-conscious from getting up at the crack of dawn. Not to mention the bizarre games of "Pass the Bomb"... Scores for that should be up this time next week. Next: Glow bowling. Despite the obvious handicap of not being able to see the lane, a few guys managed to get some pretty good scores - Jazz won a natty little bobbleheaded thing for getting a series of 472, and Matt and Liz got a few good games as well. Pretty good evening for all, I feel. Lastly, yesterday's scores. I don't know what Luke was on, but I know whatever it was I want some. He managed to stun us all with a high score of 200, with a series of 521. And as a result, he stopped sucking and moved up the league table more than a few spaces. Jess also had a pretty successful week, with a high score of 169 and a 443 series. While I'm here, we'll probably be running a tournament over weeks 8, 9 and 10. The exact mechanics aren't finalised yet, but by the looks of things a little variety is on the cards, so stay tuned. I'll be asking people next week if they want to participate, although I can't really see a reason why you wouldn't. Unless you're a loser. Until next week! -- Tony
I Swear I'll Come Up With A Halfway Relevant Title Someday
Posted 4/02/2009
I swear something changes every week in some miniscule way, because our scores are less consistent than British Rail. Big ups and downs overall, although Liz, Lucy and Paul pulled out some high series, and hopefully we'll see bowling like that this weekend. In case you missed our frantic attempted organisation, the BUSA championship thing is this weekend. In case you missed the message and you're getting the train there, you need to be at University station at 18:20 or so, preferably earlier. Jess has all the tickets, so you won't need to buy one. Should be about an hour and a half, barring snow, leaves and small children on the line. Also, if you're not sure, make sure you're signed up with the AU. It really should have been done earlier, but if you haven't, get it done before we leave, otherwise everything will be ruined forever and you won't get any complimentary hotel breakfast, because we will steal it from you. Also also slightly more true-to-life pictures of the committee have been updated. Just one more thing done on a list of millions to do. And now I can get stick for particularly unflattering pictures, instead of just inappropriate ones. :) See you Friday, chiiiiiiiiiiiiildren! -- Tony

Good to see everyone again, as well as a few new faces. Here's hoping they want to stick around for a bit. Kind of a varied week in terms of scores. There were a few people who really weren't on form, and one or two that ripped up the proverbial. Liz absolutely decimated the competition, with a 233 and a 197, and a series of 561. I can tell you now that that 233 is the first score greather than 200 that we've had all year barring Andy, so congratulations to her for that. That definitely shook up the league table a bit, but early days yet. In regards to Nottingham, this bit's just a reminder if you're going: get signed up with the AU. I talked to a few people on Tuesday and most had signed up, but I know there's a few people that haven't been bowling that are down for Notts, so on the off chance you read this, take note. I've finally finished most of my soon-to-be-assessed work, so I was going to work on a photo section for the site, at the request of Shona. Now I'm not good at picking particularly flattering shots for that, so if you have any recommendations then drop me a line. Most of them are going to be on the Facebook group, although I don't have access to the URL right at this very second. Don't think there's anything else. See you on the third. Or at least, I think it's the third. -- Tony
It's Been Five Years Since I've Done One Of These
Posted 22/01/2009
Yo. It was good to get bowling again after the Christmas hiatus. It was also good to pull out a few stellar scores this early into the year, as well. Simon J, for instance, managed to get five strikes in a row, finishing with a score of 189 and a series of 394. O' course, Simon wasn't the only one playing well. Jazz pulled out a 155 followed by a 159, finishing up with a series of 442. Let's hope we can get something like that at Nottingham, eh? I'm fairly sure that Shona was organising a Beat Our Bowlers thing for people interested in joining the society next Tuesday, so if you have a few buddies that want to chuck some balls down and chow down on beefburgers in the mean time, tell 'em to come along. They might win something. And that's the end of that chapter. -- Tony

New year, new pages on the site with information you probably already knew. Fun. Oh, and in case you missed the absolute TORRENT of e-mails from Shona, we've basically sorted out the teams for Nottingham. In short, the guy's A team is big Andy, Luke, Jazz, Matt, myself and Paul and the guy's B team is little Andy, Simon, Simon, Jay and Jacob. And an empty slot. The girls' A team is Liz, Jess and Lexy, while their B team is Shona, Lucy and Fiona. Better tournout than I expected, by the looks of things. Just as a forewarning though, if you have a driver's license you may be called forth to use it, unless you really, REALLY want a coach journey on Sunday evening from Derby to Bimringham, or something equally frustrating. I have no idea of the actual transport arrangements for Nottingham, so I'm just going to throw out a "be aware this might happen" for you to sink your teeth into. Bowling's next on on the 20th of January. I guess that's all there is to say about that, really. -- Tony

Hey. Scores are up. I also know who won the tournament, for various shades of "won". Rest assured you'll find out soon. Also, this is the absolute barebones of the new website. Parts of it suck, parts of it won't display on IE4, parts are stunning beacons of awesome and parts are pretty mediocre. Any suggestions as to layout I'd appreciate sooner rather than later, since it's going to be considerably harder to edit five pages if I'm changing anything other than colour and font and stuff. Yell at me at bowling or drop me a line at bigmadtony@gmail.com, because I never check my Uni email. Seriously, guys. Nothing's final and I sort of need feedback if I wanted to make the best site in the world. Or indeed a tribute. And no, I don't know who that guy in the background is. Nor do I know why the display is botched in IE7. Things should be pretty and transparent, and I don't know why. Stupid Microsoft. Laugh and grow fat! -- Tony
